Krita Lime PPA: always fresh versions for Ubuntu users!

A great piece of news for Ubuntu Krita users is coming today! We have just opened a repository with regular builds of Krita git master!

Link: https://launchpad.net/~dimula73/+archive/krita

The main purpose of this PPA is to provide everyone with an always fresh version of Krita, without the need to update the whole system. Now one can get all the latest Krita features without a delay.

At the moment git master version has at least three features, which are absent in Krita 2.7 Beta1 (and cannot be merged there due to code freeze):

  • New "New Image From Clipboard" dialog with a nice preview widget implemented by our new contributor Matjaž Rous
  • New "pseudo-infinite" canvas feature (read here) for dynamical image resizing
  • New "Overview Docker" which lets you see the whole image at a glance
To install the newest Krita you need to do a few steps:
  1. Check that you don't have any original calligra or krita packages provided by your distribution or project-neon (we don't check that automatically currently)
  2. Add the PPA to repositories list:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dimula73/krita
  3. Update the cache:

    sudo apt-get update
  4. Install Krita:

    sudo sudo apt-get install krita-testing krita-testing-dbg

Update: (not needed anymore)
After installing this package you should restart X-server to get environment variables updated!

Of course, being based on git-master may sometimes result in a bit of instability, so make sure you report any problems so we can fix them! :)

  1. Instead editing "sources.list" and adding key better use "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dimula73/krita"

then normal apt update and install

    1. You need to restart X server after installation. This can be achieved by either relogin or reboot. It might also have happened that right when you tried it, the repository was in the process of update, just try one more time.

  5. Hello Dmitry,

I specifically need your "Krita Lime PPA with builds from Git Master". You see I'm having this bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=298144 (krita wacom big offset issue) and the solution is your fix :)

I'm running Mint 15 olivia = Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, and when I follow your instructions I get the following output:

    >>>sudo sudo apt-get install krita-testing krita-testing-dbg
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package krita-testing
E: Unable to locate package krita-testing-dbg
    >>>

I googled "Unable to locate package krita-testing" and "Unable to locate package krita-testing-dbg" with quotes for the specific issue and got no results (you get results for unrelated issues of other packages that can't be located). Could you help me with what I have to do so that these packages are located and I get your fix so my krita doesn't have the offset problem? Thanks :)

    1. It worked! FYI I followed http://krita.org/download instructions for your Krita Lime PPA with builds from Git Master. But I still have a problem here, what I expect is to find krita in mint menu, but it isn't there anywhere. the NEW packages installed are create-resources krita-testing krita-testing-dbg libmagick++5 libplot2c2 libpstoedit0c2a libtiff4 pstoedit. Any ideas how I can open your Krita I just installed? And why it isn't in mint menu?

  6. Hello,

At first thank youy for your builds that always provides us the finest krita version.

I have a problem with your build V2.9 alpha, and it was the same thing with the V2.8alpha.

When I try to draw, I have no trace at all on the canvas, whereas the brush works just fine in the brush editor.
    I use ubuntu 13.10 on a X61T tablet PC.
I have the same result if I try to draw with the mouse, or with a Wacom Bamboo plugged to the PC.
I have no issue with the official build from krita.org.

Have you ever heard about this kind of problem, or would you have any idea of the way to solve it?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi, Lazzaro!

Could you please writ me on our IRC (#krita on Freenode) so we could solve the issue? Some versions of the Surface Pro are known to work with Krita, some not, so we need a bit more information :)

  8. Hi. I can't find the krita icon in the applications menu. The only way I can open it is by typing the "krita" command. I've installed on Linux Mint 17.1 and now I'm testing it on Elementary OS Freya.

  9. Hi,

are there any plans to provide a PPA with stable Krita versions?
I'd like to install Krita 2.9 on Linux Mint 17.1, but I'd rather have a stable version (+stable updates) than possibly buggy development snapshots.

    Cheers,
    Daniel

    1. I have the same issue. Note however that according to its webpage at launchpad, there IS a stable version in the ppa, as well as a testing build. Unfortunately, it is still at V2.8. It hasn't updated to 2.9 yet. https://launchpad.net/~dimula73/+archive/ubuntu/krita

  14. Thank you for the installers. I tried to follow the instructions on Kirita's web site and my linux complained about: krita : Depends: calligra-libs (= 1:2.8.5-0ubuntu6~ubuntu14.04~ppa1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
With you installers now I'm up and running without problems. Thank you again.

    2. change distro template Deepin/jessie to Debian 8.0

      run "gksudo gedit /etc/lsb-release"

      edit to:

      DISTRIB_ID=Debian
      DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.0
      DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Debian 8.0"

after that, u can add repository
